The smell of the place reminds me of a rehab Jim was in for a time while we were still trying to figure out what was wrong with him. From the start, he feared ALS, but one doctor after another told him not to jump to conclusions until they knew for certain.
He was sure of it a long time before they finally confirmed it.
Tom checks in at the reception desk and gets guest passes for us. As we walk toward his motherâs room at the end of a long hallway, he casually reaches for my hand, as if thatâs something we do every day. Maybe it will be.
âRemember that she wonât know me. It can be upsetting, even for people who donât know her.â
âI understand.â At least, I think I do. Thankfully, I donât have much experience with dementia.
He knocks softly on the door before he enters a bright, cheerful space with one bed, a TV mounted on the wall, family photos in frames on another wall and a view of a garden that must be lovely in the summer. His mother is seated in a comfortable recliner chair, looking at the TV, and doesnât react to our arrival.
Tom releases my hand and moves into her line of vision. âHi, Mom. Itâs your son, Tommy, and Iâve brought my friend Lexi to meet you.â
His words sear me. Imagine having to introduce yourself to your own mother.
âMy son passed away.â
âNo, Mom, that was Dad. Iâm still here.â
âNo, Tommy died.â
I canât bear this for him, so I step forward. âHi, Mrs. Hammett, Iâm Tommyâs friend Lexi. He brought me to meet you.â
She takes a careful look at me and then shifts her gaze back to him. âTommy didnât die?â
âNo, Ma, Iâm right here.â
She begins to cry.
When he gets down on his knees to comfort her, my heart is completely lost to him. If a man is judged by how he treats his mother, he gets an A-plus.
âTommy, I want to go home.â
âThey take such good care of you here.â
âI hate it here.â
âI know, Ma.â
âWhatâs your name?â
âIâm your son, Tommy.â
I ache for him. Itâs unbearable, but heâs nothing but patient with her as he answers the same questions over and over.
A nurse pushing a wheelchair comes to collect her for dinner.
I check my watch. Itâs only four thirty, but everything is earlier in here. I remember that, too, from when Jim was in a similar facility for a time.
After Tom and the nurse help his mother move to the wheelchair, Tom leans in to kiss her cheek.
âIâll see you again soon, Ma, okay?â
She gives him a blank look. âOkay.â
The nurse smiles at me as she rolls Mrs. Hammett out of the room.
I go right to him and hold out my arms.
He steps into my embrace, drops his head to my shoulder and holds on to me.
âYouâre such a good son.â
âNo, Iâm not. Sheâs living in a place she hates.â
âSheâs safe and clean and well fed and has a beautiful private room that Iâm sure you pay extra for.
